The MLU uses Aeris.net
as its data transmission network. The Aeris network can be described as
an umbrella network for local and regional analog cell phone networks.
It is the same technology used to provide roaming service on your cell phone.
It provides a larger coverage area but is more expensive to use on a per
update basis. GPS systems using this network on not intended to get updates
every 5 minutes. Users of this network typically only need to locate their
vehicles a few times per day, once a week or only when the vehicle has
been stolen. Vehicle recovery and trailer tracking are the most popular
applications.
Aeris has formal agreements with cellular carriers throughout
North America to support the deployment of MicroBurst® technology,
enabling the wireless transmission of data. This network covers over
98 percent of the U.S. population and 100 percent of the populations
of Canada and Mexico. The MicroBurst technology
operates completely within current established cellular networks, piggybacking
on unused channels.
